How to Clean the Fuel Injectors on a 1989 Honda Accord

If your 1989 Honda Accord has begun running a bit roughly, it may be time to clean its fuel injectors. As fuel injectors age, they become clogged, preventing them from effectively helping your engine to fire. Fortunately, cleaning your Accord's fuel injectors is a task that is as simple as filling up your gas tank.

Tools Used: Fuel injector cleaner, Gas pump

Clean the Fuel Injectors

Drive your Accord until the fuel tank is less than 1/4 full. This allows you to pour fresh gasoline in after you put in the fuel injector cleaner. Adding gasoline helps mix the fuel injector cleaner in the tank, so it doesn't all run through the engine at once. The cleaner must pass through the injectors over time to effectively clear out residue.

Pour a bottle of fuel injector cleaner into the gas tank. There are several brands that work well with the 1989 Honda Accord's fuel injection system, including Sea Foam, STP and Techron.

Fill the tank with gas until it is completely full. This helps ensure that the fuel injector cleaner properly mixes with the fuel.

Drive the car. You should not fill the tank again until it is less than 1/4 full. As you drive, the chemicals in the fuel injector cleaner will strip residue from the fuel injectors, which will help your Accord's engine run more smoothly and efficiently.

Tips & Warnings

Do not pour the fuel injector cleaner into the throttle body. The engine in a 1989 Honda Accord is not designed for this type of cleaning. The cleaner will not reach the fuel injectors, so doing this will simply waste your money.
