How to Remove the Serpentine Belt on a 1989 Ford F250

The serpentine belt in a 1989 Ford F250 is similar in many ways to the belt systems in other makes and models of vehicles in that it runs the engine as well as various components such as the water pump, the alternator and the air conditioner. However, in older models of the F250 additional steps are required to remove the belt due to the upper radiator hose and fan shroud, which were moved in later models. Removing the serpentine belt requires only a basic knowledge of how to use hand tools, allowing you to get your truck back on the road.

Tools Used: Drip pan, Socket set, Ratchet, Flat-head screwdriver, Wrench set

Remove Serpentine Belt

Open the hood of your vehicle and locate the serpentine belt configuration chart on the underside of the hood. Check the motor to locate the upper radiator hose that runs through the path of the serpentine belt. Place the drip pan underneath the upper radiator hose and use the socket set or wrenches to loosen the bolt where the hose clamps onto the radiator. Drain the hose into the drip pan and fold it back out of the way of the belt path.

Remove the fan shroud if you feel that it would make removal of the serpentine belt easier (optional). Use the socket set or the wrenches to loosen the bolts to remove the fan shroud.

Slot the ½ inch socket onto the ratchet and place the socket over the bolt that protrudes from the automatic belt tensioner shown in the configuration diagram on the hood of the vehicle. Slowly turn the bolt in the appropriate direction shown on the chart and use the flat-head screwdriver in your other hand to slide the belt off of the pulley. Carefully slide the automatic belt tensioner back into place.

Remove the belt from the other pulleys within the system and pull it out of the engine well. Reverse the instructions to install a new belt, following the chart diagram from the hood of the vehicle for proper routing of the belt through the various components of the engine.

Tips & Warnings

If for some reason the configuration chart is missing from your Ford F250, you can download an owner's manual from the Ford website (see Resources), or you can visit your local Ford dealership to acquire one on-site.
