How to Replace a Radiator on a 1987 Ford LTD

The radiator in the 1987 Ford LTD houses the engine coolant. When you turn the engine on, the coolant flows from the radiator, into the engine and back into the radiator. The engine is liquid-cooled but air flows through the fins on the radiator. As the air passes through the fins, it cools the coolant in the radiator so it can go back into the engine and keep things cool in there. Once the radiator has cooled, you can replace it on a 1987 Ford LTD.

Tools Used: Drain pan, Pliers, Socket set, Funnel

Replace a Radiator

Place a drain pan under the petcock on the bottom of the radiator. Open the petcock using a pair of pliers and drain the coolant into the drain pan.

Remove the radiator hose from the lower radiator by prying the hose clamp off with a pair of pliers.

Remove the upper radiator hose form the radiator by prying the hose clamp off with a pair of pliers.

Remove the hose from the radiator that connects the radiator to the fluid expansion tank by prying the clamp off using a pair of pliers.

Remove the bolts that secure the radiator shroud to the upper radiator support and then place the shroud off to the side.

Remove the bolts that secure the radiator to the radiator support beams. There are four bolts, one in each corner. Use a socket and ratchet to remove the bolts.

Pull the radiator upwards and out of the engine bay.

Slide the new radiator in place, and secure it to the radiator support beams using the bolts, socket and ratchet.

Place the radiator shroud on top of the radiator, and secure it into place using the bolts, socket and ratchet.

Reconnect the hoses to the expansion tank, upper radiator outlet and lower radiator inlet using the band clamps and the pliers.

Place a funnel into the radiator filler spout and drain the coolant back into the new radiator.
