How to Change the Engine Oil on a 2007 Chevy Impala

You should change the engine oil in your 2007 Chevrolet Impala every 3,000 miles or when the oil life indicator shows a diminished oil capacity. The engine oil in your car lubricates and protects the engine components. You can change the oil in your car at home for a fraction of the cost that a service center charges.

Step 1 - Raise the front of your Impala with a jack. Support the car on a set of jack stands. Remove the jack when the jack stands are secure.

Step 2 - Position a drain pan beneath the drain plug on the oil pan. Remove the oil drain plug with a wrench and wait while the oil drains from the oil pan. Replace the oil drain plug and tighten it with a wrench.

Step 3 - Move the oil drain pan beneath the oil filter. You will find the oil filter near the front wheel on the passenger side of the car. Remove the oil filter with an oil filter wrench and place it facedown in the drain pan. Wipe the mounting area with a clean, dry cloth.

Step 4 - Rub a thin layer of oil around the gasket on the new filter. Fill the new filter completely with clean oil before installing it. Screw the new oil filter into the mounting area until it is tight. Turn it an additional ½ turn to tighten the seal. Remove the drain pan from beneath the car.

Raise the front of your car slightly and remove the jack stands. Lower the car to the ground and raise the hood. Remove the oil fill cap and add three to four quarts of oil, checking the oil level frequently to avoid overfilling the engine. Replace the oil fill cap and close the hood.

TIPS: Dispose of the used oil properly. Most auto parts stores will accept it free of charge to process for recycling.
