Chrysler Crank Sensor Replacement Instructions

The crankshaft position sensor on your Chrysler vehicle is part of the ignition system and monitors engine speed. The engine computer uses electrical current signals from this and other sensors to change ignition timing for better engine performance. As you can see, a bad or malfunctioning crankshaft sensor will affect engine efficiency and fuel injectors operation. To restore engine performance, replace the bad crankshaft sensor on your Chrysler model.

Removing the Sensor

Disconnect the ground or black battery cable using a backup wrench to hold the terminal bolt in place as you loosen the retaining nut with another wrench. Then pull the battery cable with a pair of slip joint pliers. If you have a battery with side terminals, [use a ratchet](https://itstillruns.com/use-ratchet-5114732.html) and socket to disconnect the cable. Lift the front of your vehicle with a floor jack and position two jack stands under the frame on each side to support it. Apply the parking brakes and chock the rear wheels. Find the crankshaft position sensor. On some models, you will be able to find the sensor hidden somewhere around the starter motor. Other engine models might have the sensor closer to the transmission. Remember that only the top of the sensor's body, where the electrical connector plugs into, will be visible. The magnet at the bottom is inserted into the engine block or bracket. Remove the starter motor or any other component that interferes with the replacement of the sensor. You might need a set or wrenches and/or a ratchet and socket set for this. Clean the area around the sensor location with a shop rag and then unplug the sensor electrical connector by hand. Then unscrew the sensor mounting bolt using a wrench or ratchet and socket and remove the sensor from the vehicle.

Installing the Sensor

Make sure the new crankshaft sensor has an O-ring seal installed and then set the sensor in place. Start the sensor mounting bolt by hand, and then tighten the bolt using the wrench or ratchet and socket. But do not overtighten the bolt, or you will damage the sensor. Plug the sensor electrical connector and install any other engine components that you had to remove. Then lower the vehicle and remove the chocks from the rear wheels. Finally, connect the ground or black battery cable using the two wrenches or ratchet and socket if you have a battery with side terminals.
