How to Replace a Cam Position Sensor on a 2002 Trailblazer

The location of the camshaft position sensor on a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer depends on the vehicle's engine type. A Trailblazer with a six-cylinder engine has the sensor located on one of the cylinder heads, while a V8 engine has the sensor mounted on the engine block. The procedure for removing and installing a camshaft position sensor is essentially the same, regardless of where it is mounted. The camshaft sensor works with the crankshaft position sensor and is essential to determining the fuel injection timing on each engine cylinder.

Step 1 - Loosen the cable clamp nut on the battery's negative cable (the black cable), then remove the cable from the battery terminal. Set the cable aside, so that it won't come into contact with the terminal.

Step 2 - Disconnect the camshaft sensor's electrical connector, squeezing the tabs on the connector and unplugging it.

Step 3 - Remove the single mounting bolt on the camshaft position sensor, using a wrench, then remove the sensor from either the cylinder head (it is near the engine oil filler neck) or the engine block.

Step 4 - Place the cylinder head or engine block in position and apply the mounting bolt to secure it. Reconnect the electrical connector.

Reconnect the negative battery cable with its cable clamp and nut.
