The airbag light illuminates on the instrument panel of your 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee when there is a problem with the airbag system. Any problem with that system should be addressed immediately to prevent the airbag from malfunctioning. Once the problem has been fixed, the light may or may not still be on. If it's still on, you definitely want to reset it at once. The good news is that resetting the airbag light is a simple fix you can do right at home in just a few minutes.
Step 1 - Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "On" position. Do not start the engine.
Step 2 - Look for a port under the steering column that is the same shape as the plug on your code scanner. Plug the code scanner into the port. The Cherokee's battery will power the scanner on.
Step 3 - Use the arrow keys on the scanner to locate the reset light function. Select this function and the airbag light will turn off. Remove the scanner from the port and turn the vehicle off.
Turn the engine on. Check the instrument panel to see that the airbag light is off.
TIPS: If you don't wish to purchase a scanner, you can take the vehicle to an auto parts store to have the code read and the light reset, usually for free.

WARNINGS: You can reset the code by disconnecting the battery, but it's not a great idea because it erases other important data stored in the computer. You will also have to reset your clock and radio presets.
