1984 BMW 525I Headlights & Signal Arm Removal Instructions

If the headlight and turn signal in your 1984 BMW 525I, part of the BMW 5-Series, are damaged or broken, you need to replace them. The headlight and turn signal are two separate assemblies residing next to each other on the front end of the vehicle. Fortunately, removing them does not require moving any other extraneous parts, such as the grille or bumper, which is a common part of the replacement procedure in many other vehicles. Expect the whole job to take about an hour for both sides of the front end.

Tools Used: Tools, Socket wrench set

Remove Headlights & Signal Arm

Turn off your 1984 BMW 525I if it was on and prop open the hood.

Locate the 10mm bolt on top of the turn signal assembly and remove it.

Pull the turn signal assembly out of the fender until you see the wiring harness behind it. Unplug the wiring harness and pull the turn signal the rest of the way out of the fender.

Remove the two 10mm bolts on top of the headlight assembly as well as the one revealed when you removed the turn signal.

Pull the headlight assembly forward, away from the engine compartment, until you can easily reach the two wiring harnesses. Unplug the wiring harnesses and pull the headlight completely out.

Repeat the previous procedures to remove the headlight and turn signal for the other side of the front end of your 1984 BMW 525I.

Tips & Warnings

Place painter's tape around the bumper and fender if you are afraid of scratching them while you remove the turn signal and headlight.

Save the bulbs inside the assemblies for reuse in other assemblies.
