How to Adjust the Idle on a 1985 Honda Gold Wing Aspencade

The Honda Goldwing Aspencade is known as one of the most comfortable and powerful motorcycles made. Because of its upright, stretched out seating position and the large dependable engine under the seat, the Goldwing has become a favorite among highway riders, motorcycle tourers and commuters and enthusiasts of all types. However, some basic maintenance is necessary on the Goldwing, like all motorcycles, such as idle screw adjustment. Keep your Honda Goldwing running great by adjusting the idle of the bike at home.

Adjust the Idle

Set your Goldwing Aspencade on its center stand, put the transmission in neutral and start the bike. Allow the motorcycle to idle for 10 to 15 minutes so that it will warm up to operating temperature. Idle screw adjustment will be inaccurate otherwise.

Look at the right side of the motorcycle while it warms up. Near the rear brake lever you should see a tube that runs from the tank to the carburetor. Slightly further toward the center of the bike, near the carburetor inlet, there is a flathead screw. This is the idle adjustment screw.

Watch the tachometer while the bike idles and make note of the speed at which the engine is running. Most Goldwings should have an idle speed between 950 and 1,200 rpm.

Use a screwdriver to turn the idle screw clockwise if the Goldwing is running at too low an idle speed (below 950 rpm) until the tachometer reads within the recommended range.

Turn the idle screw counterclockwise if the Goldwing is running at too high an idle speed (above 1,200 rpm) until the tachometer reads within the recommended range.

Take the bike for a short test ride. Pay close attention to how the motorcycle behaves when stopping and starting from rest. When you return, make any necessary final adjustments to the idle screw. Depending on your altitude, the bike may idle best closer to the bottom of the 950-1,200 rpm range, or closer to the top. Listen for pops and sputters from the engine to determine what speed it best for your bike at your altitude.
