How to Assemble the Turn Signals on a 1986 Honda Rebel

The Honda CMX250, better known as the Rebel, has been one of the company's best-selling small displacement motorcycles, a fact that has kept the model in production for over 20 years. Older bikes, such as the 1986 Rebel, survive well. However, their turn signals may fall off or become damaged in some way, facilitating the need to replace the turn signals. While the signals are not entirely difficult to assemble and install, the Rebel uses an unusual forward mounting position beneath the handlebar risers, requiring the speedometer to be removed to access the turn signal's wiring.

Tools Used: Turn signal bases, Mounting stems, 6 mm Phillips head screw, Phillips screwdriver, 10 and 12 mm sockets, Socket wrench, 12 mm wrench

Assemble Turn Signals

Assembling an Individual Turn Signal Unit

Slide the turn signal base's wiring through the mounting stem. Pull the wiring out of the hole on the bottom of the mounting stem, next to the stem's threaded mounting post.

Insert a 6mm Phillips head screw into the hole on the back of the turn signal base. Use a Phillips screwdriver to tighten the screw to secure the base to the mounting stem.

Install the turn signal onto the motorcycle, using either of the methods listed below.

Installing Front Turn Signals

Remove the mounting bolts from both sides of the speedometer's dash bracket, using a 10 mm socket and a socket wrench. Lift the entire speedometer assembly away from the upper fork clamp and handlebars to reveal the turn signal's mounting nuts and wiring.

Unscrew the mounting nuts from the turn signal's threaded posts with a 12 mm wrench.

Pull the old turn signals out of the handlebar risers. Unplug the turn signal connectors from the motorcycle's wiring harness.

Insert the new turn signals into the handlebar risers. Slip the mounting nuts over the turn signal wiring and screw them onto the threaded mounting posts. Tighten the nuts with a 12 mm wrench.

Plug the turn signal connectors into the motorcycle's wiring harness.

Place the speedometer and its dash bracket onto the upper fork clamp. Tighten the mounting bolts with a 10 mm socket and a socket wrench.

Installing Rear Turn Signals

Use a 12 mm socket and a socket wrench to unscrew the mounting nut from the turn signal's threaded mounting post under the rear fender.

Follow the turn signal's wiring from the fender to the motorcycle's wiring harness (positioned near the license plate) and unplug the turn signal connectors.

Pull the old turn signal out of the rear fender.

Slide the new turn signal's wiring and threaded mounting posts through the rear fender. Slip the mounting nuts over the wiring and screw them onto the mounting posts with a 12 mm socket and a socket wrench.

Plug the turn signal connectors into the motorcycle's wiring harness.
