How to Install a Wheel Cylinder Clip on a 1986 Chevrolet Camaro

The wheel cylinder or drum brake clip on your 1986 Camaro can be changed by the home mechanic with a few precautions. Be careful when working on the brake system as it can contain asbestos. Never clean the area by blowing it with compressed air; use a rag and brake system cleaner or denatured alcohol if the area needs cleaned. You should wear an approved respirator mask when working on the brake system.

Tools Used: Respirator mask, Jack, Jack stands, Lug wrench, Brake spring tool, Screwdriver, Duct tape, Curved needle-nose pliers

Install a Wheel Cylinder Clip

Raise the vehicle on a jack. Place it securely on jack stands.

Release the parking brake handle. Use a lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts, remove the wheel and tire assembly.

Remove the wheel-mounting stud lock washers. Mark the relationship of the axle and the brake drum with chalk for ease of reinstallation.

Remove the brake drum by pulling straight out. Use a brake spring tool to remove the primary shoe return spring from the anchor pin pivot at the top of the brake shoe.

Unhook the spring from the primary brake shoe and remove it by tipping it out of the hole. Push on the bottom of the automatic adjuster actuator lever down towards the bottom and remove the link from the top of the lever by lifting it off manually. Remove the actuator link.

Remove the secondary shoe return spring from the anchor pin pivot with a brake spring tool. Remove the shoe guide from the anchor pin from the rear of the backing plate.

Remove the primary shoe hold down spring and pin. Remove the secondary shoe hold spring and pin. The secondary shoe is the shorter of the two.

Remove the actuator lever, pawl and lever return spring. Screw the adjuster wheel all the way.

Pivot the secondary shoe to the rear and down. Remove it from the adjusting screw spring and remove the adjusting screw and spring. The longer hook on the spring goes toward the rear.

Pull the parking brake strut and the spring assembly from behind the axle flange. Pull out the primary shoe and pivot it down until it is free of the backing plate. Remove the spring from the parking brake lever.

Remove the E-clip holding the parking brake lever to the secondary shoe with a screwdriver. Separate the shoe from the parking brake lever.

Remove the brake line fitting from the rear of the wheel cylinder. Cap the brake line with duct tape to prevent contamination.

Use curved needle-nose pliers to remove the wheel cylinder-retaining clip from the rear of the wheel cylinder.

Place a screwdriver handle between the wheel cylinder and the axle flange to hold the cylinder in place while you install the retaining clip. Reverse removal steps to complete the repair.
