How to Change the Fuel Filter on a 1989 Buick Park Avenue

After 50,000 miles, you should replace the fuel filter on the 1989 Buick Park Avenue. The fuel filter may need to be replaced sooner, however, if it clogs with debris. This prevents fuel from reaching the engine smoothly, making it difficult to start the engine or to accelerate. The fuel filter for the Buick Park Avenue is inexpensive and it should take you no more than 20 minutes to replace it.

Tools Used: New fuel filter, Crescent wrenches, Car jack, Jack stand, Rag, Soap and water, Motor oil

Change the Fuel Filter

Open the hood of your Buick Park Avenue. Loosen the Schrader valve on the fuel rail just before the fuel injectors. This action releases pressure from the fuel system.

Place the car jack in front of the driver's-side rear wheel. Raise the Buick Park Avenue. Slide a jack stand below the body. Rest the Park Avenue on the jack stand.

Put on your gloves. Hold the fuel filter outlet nut with your crescent wrench. The outlet side of the fuel filter sends filtered fuel to the engine. The inlet side of the fuel filter receives unfiltered fuel from the fuel pump. Turn the nut on the outlet fuel pipe with your other crescent wrench to loosen the outlet pipe from the filter.

Repeat Step 3 for the inlet fuel pipe.

Loosen the 8 mm bolt on the fuel filter bracket holding the filter in place. Slide the filter out of the metal strap holding it.

Insert the replacement fuel filter. Dab the threaded fittings of the fuel filter with motor oil to ensure a smooth seal with the fuel pipes. Attach the fuel pipes to the fuel filter. Tighten the filter into place in the bracket. Lower the Buick Park Avenue.
