How to Replace a Fan Belt on a 1988 Cadillac Deville

Replacing the fan belt, or serpentine belt, in a 1988 Cadillac Deville will increase the overall performance of the engine. The serpentine belt encompasses all of the pulleys that help your engine operate properly. Replacing the belt takes about one to two hours if you have never done so before. You can purchase all of the tools and materials needed for this job at an auto-parts store or a General Motors dealership.

Tools Used: 3/8-inch drive ratchet and socket set, New fan (serpentine) belt

Replace Fan Belt

Depress the belt tensioner pulley using a 3/8-drive ratchet and the correct socket. Push down on the tensioner to release the pressure on the belt.

Remove the belt from the vehicle completely.

Install the new belt using the belt routing diagram located on top of the radiator shroud. Depress the belt tensioner to wrap the belt around the final pulley in the configuration. Release the belt tensioner when the belt is completely installed.

Check the alignment of the belt on each pulley to ensure that it is straight throughout the entire engine.

Tips & Warnings

Changing your fan belt or serpentine belt every two years or 30,000 is a good way to keep your car running smoothly.

Do not insert fingers between the serpentine belt and the tensioner assembly at any time. Failure to adhere to this warning could result in injury or loss of limb.
