Oldsmobile marked its centennial by debuting the Alero in 1999 in an effort to compete with well-established imports. The Alero did help conclude the Olds small car story on a high note. The 2002 to 2004 Aleros offered a 2.2L engine with greater fuel efficiency, making it attractive to the used-vehicle shopper. The information details the installation of a new thermostat in those models.
Step 1 - Drain the cooling system. Take out the bolts that hold the water pump feed pipe to the thermostat housing.
Step 2 - Lift out the thermostat-housing-to-water-pump feed pipe. Pull out the thermostat.
Step 3 - Set the new thermostat in position. Connect the thermostat housing-to-water-pump feed pipe.
Step 4 - Set the bolt in place that holds the thermostat-housing-to-water-pump feed pipe. Torque the bolt to 89 inch pounds. (See Tips and install the exhaust manifold if necessary.)
Refill the cooling system to the proper level with the appropriate type of coolant. Start the engine and check for leaks. Make the necessary adjustments to coolant levels to assure optimum engine performance.
TIPS: If the vehicle has an automate transaxle, remove the exhaust manifold before proceeding with the removal and installation of the thermostat.

WARNINGS: Drain the coolant into a container that can be sealed. Dogs and cats will drink coolant left in open containers or pooled on the floor and ingestion is usually fatal. Reuse coolant unless it is contaminated or old. Dispose of used coolant properly.
