How To Turn On Google SafeSearch To Filter Explicit Content

SafeSearch ensures users don't see explicit content in Google search results. The extra protection can be turned on or off through the settings.

Google's SafeSearch feature ensures users don't see mature or explicit content in their search results. The feature is turned off by default for all adult users, but can manually be switched on from the settings menu. It can also be enabled on both desktop and mobile, irrespective of whether the user is signed-in to their Google account or not.

Changing Google's SafeSearch settings is fairly easy, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind before making the change. For starters, users only have to enable or disable the feature on one of their devices for Google to automatically sync the choice across all devices linked to the same account. However, if the Google account belongs to a child and is managed by a parent using the Family Link app, it can only be disabled by them from their device.

To enable SafeSearch on Windows, Mac, or Linux computers, navigate to Google's SafeSearch settings page using a web browser. Now simply use the toggle switch to turn on the feature. SafeSearch is also available from Google's search settings, which can be accessed from the Google homepage. To do that, head over to Google.com using a web browser, click on 'Settings' in the bottom-right corner, and select 'Search Settings' from the pop-up menu. On the next page, under the 'SafeSearch Filters' section, check the box next to 'Turn on SafeSearch' before scrolling down to click on the blue 'Save' button at the bottom. A pop-up stating "Your preferences have been saved" will be displayed and simply click 'OK' on the pop-up message to ensure that SafeSearch remains enabled for every subsequent search using that browser.

Enable SafeSearch On Mobile

To enable or disable SafeSearch on Android or iOS, fire up the Google app and tap on the profile avatar in the top-right corner. On the pop-up menu, select 'Settings' and then tap on 'Hide explicit results.' On the next page, switch on the toggle next to 'Explicit results filter' if it isn't already set to the on position. This will help hide explicit content on Google Search.

SafeSearch helps filter out most of the explicit content from search results across images, videos, and websites. However, Google admits that it isn't 100-percent accurate, which means some undesirable content may still filter through from time to time. When it is turned off (the default setting), Google will offer users the most relevant search results, which may include explicit content in some cases.
