The 2000 Dodge Durango came equipped with an AM/FM CD player, capable of controlling a glove-box mounted six-disc CD changer. Later editions were available with Mp3 players and DVD navigation units. To replace a malfunctioning stock stereo or upgrade the factory radio, choose a stereo that is compatible with the Durango for the simplest installation. Aftermarket stereos that are incompatible in size or wiring can be installed with adapters. Pay an audio technician to perform the installation or save the money and install the stereo yourself.
Step 1 - Lift the hood of the Dodge Durango and disconnect the negative battery cable from the negative battery lead post. Use a 10 mm wrench to loosen the cable's clamp before pulling the cable from the negative battery terminal and resting the cable away from the battery until the installation is complete.
Step 2 - Remove the eight screws around the perimeter of the Durango's main dash panel with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove the lower dash panel on the driver's side of the Dodge to reveal the two screws on the left side of the stereo mounting dock trim panel. Remove the two screws and store them for reinstallation.
Step 3 - Remove the trim panel that surrounds the stereo assembly. Remove the two screws on either side of the Dodge Durango's stereo mounting dock with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the factory stereo from the stereo dock.
Step 4 - Pull the stereo wiring from the rear outlets on the stock stereo. Unplug the black antenna cable from the right side of the radio's rear panel.
Step 5 - Slide the aftermarket stereo faceplate adapter into the vacant stereo mounting dock in the Dodge's dashboard. Replace the screws that bound the old radio into the dash mount.
Step 6 - Connect the Dodge stereo wiring to a wiring harness adapter. Plug the stereo wiring into the appropriate leads on the harness and plug the harness lead into the corresponding leads on the rear panel of the new stereo.
Step 7 - Plug the antenna cable into the outlet marked "FM ANT" on the back of the new stereo.
Step 8 - Slide the new stereo into the stereo mounting dock via the faceplate adapter. Push the stereo into the dock until it snaps into place by the faceplate adapter.
Step 9 - Replace the dash panels that conceal the stereo mounting dock and screw in the screws around the perimeter with the screwdriver. Return to the battery.
Step 10 - Place the negative battery cable clamp back around the negative battery terminal lead post. Tighten the clamp with the wrench. Close the Dodge Durango's hood.
